Why Earth Day Matters: By Youth Writer Brooklyn Earl

You’ve probably heard of Earth Day—but have you ever wondered why it actually matters? It’s more than just a day about the environment—it’s about the future we all share. Every action we take today—big or small—ripples into the world our children and grandchildren will inherit. From the air we breathe to the food we eat; our planet’s health affects every part of our daily lives.

Earth Day is a reminder that protecting the planet isn’t just a responsibility for scientists or politicians—it’s something we can all contribute to. Whether it’s reducing waste, supporting sustainable businesses, planting trees, or simply being mindful of our energy use, each choice matters.

But beyond the practical steps, Earth Day is also a chance to reflect. It’s a moment to consider how connected we all are—to each other, to the natural world, and to the future we want to create. By taking time to understand the challenges our environment faces, we can make choices that not only help our planet today but ensure a thriving, sustainable tomorrow.

So, as we celebrate Earth Day on April 22, let’s ask ourselves: what kind of future do we want to leave behind, and what do we want to tell our future children?  Let’s try our best and make the world a better place!
