DRUMMING WITH THE HEART: YOUTH POETRY AND PHOTOS FEATURED FOR NATIONAL POETRY MONTH

Established in Canada in 1998 by the League of Canadian Poets, National Poetry Month takes place every April and brings together lovers of poetry from across the country to celebrate poetry’s vital place in Canada’s culture. We, at youthLEADarts, are proud to share the voices, words, images and art of youth who participate in LEAD programs. Their creations lift, inspire, inform, ignite and connect us.

Today’s original poem was composed by Victoria, a grade 7 student in Vancouver. She reminds us that we are stronger…better…when we drum with the heart. Her photograph is a perfect metaphor for community.

Drumming With the Heart

Teamwork.

In this picture you can see that a drum is in the process of being built.

Here,

at Britannia,

we are an Indigenous focused community.

Our amazing educators teach us

how the drum is sacred,

unique,

toward the people.

The drum echoes the heartbeat of our community.

Constructing a drum

takes time.

Multiple hands

are essential to the process.

The more help,

the better the drum.

This is similar to the success of a community.

The more connected we are,

The better the community.
